Although I don't own a Metal Gear game (or PS for that matter), I've played some of the titles, mainly Guns of the Patriots and MGO. Absolutely brilliant games. I'm a major fan, not just of the franchise, but of it's art team. More specifically, the unique and unmistakable art of Yoji Shinkawa.
With the upcoming release of Phantom Pain, I got interested again and checked out more of Shinkawa's work. Of course I got inspired and ran to the Arts store to get myself a Pentel Brush Pen. After charging it up and doodling to try out the brush itself, I wanted to try and mimic a portrait of somenone. Shinkawa-style, ahah. Usually, I'm awful at this sort of thing since I'm a rough drawer in terms of lines and shading, however, since the Brush Pen has this amazing flexibility and natural feel of movement accompanying the hand, I fell in love with the flow.
Basing myself on a picture of a good friend of mine who is also a major japanese culture fan, using the Brush Pen, a 0,7mm and 2900HB Graphite, I drew this portrait of him, which I think came out really well. It's not very reminiscent of Shinkawa's work since I don't have all the stroking and brushing technics nailed yet, but our own personal touch is also important. I'm going to continue sketching out stuff like this. This pen is awesome!
Question! By the way guys, is there anyone out there that supplies this sort of brush but to the digital platform, for use in PS?
Please, feel free to comment and criticize!
Hope you like it, Mamen-san!
